Hip Pain. Is It Trochanteric Bursitis?
Pain on the side of the hip that travels down the side of the thigh, particulaly after you walk or run, can be associated with a condition known as Trochanteric Bursitis, a.k.a. Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS). A common occurance given the repetitive movement of walking and running.
The prevalence of unilateral GTPS is 15.0% in women and 8.5% in men, and that of bilateral GTPS is 6.6% in women and 1.9% in men. In a study by Lievense et al, the annual incidence of trochanteric pain in primary care was reported as being 1.8 per 1000 patients.Trochanteric bursitis can occur in adults of any age.
The greater trochanter is the bony part that sticks out on the side of your hip. A bursa covers this bony point to protect the tendons in this area. A bursa is fluid filled sac and bursitis is inflammation of a bursa.
If you are experiencing pain in this area that was not from direct trauma, then it is commonly caused by repetitive use. Pressure to the area by pressing in on it or lying on it can be very painful if the bursa is inflamed. The pain also causes muscles to react, some tighten, some weaken.

Hip pain and bursitis can be very exhausting when it lingers. Unfortunately, it often does. Our normal daily walking and activities can sometimes be the overwhelming movements that perpetuate this condition.
